The Association of Kenyan Professionals in Atlanta (AKPA) is now accepting applications for the 2008 AKPA Student of the Year Award. As in previous years, the AKPA Student of the Year will also be awarded the Njeri Karangu Memorial Scholarship. Interested students may now submit their applications for the award and scholarship by downloading and completing the application form.

Background information

Since 2002, AKPA has awarded the AKPA Student of the Year (SOY) award to a top Kenyan student studying in the greater Atlanta area. In addition to receiving the award, the selected student also receives a scholarship from AKPA. Past recipients have been awarded scholarships of up to $1,000.

Dr. Njeri Karangu was a teacher and an advocate for education and students, particularly for Kenyan students living in the Atlanta area. In recognition of Dr. Karangu’s passion for education and her pioneering leadership of AKPA’s Education Committee, in 2004, AKPA members voted to change the name of the scholarship to the Njeri Karangu Memorial Scholarship. It was during that time that the size of the scholarship was doubled to its present level. This year, the recipient of the Student of the Year Award will receive an AKPA Student Membership and will be actively involved in the Education Committee’s community outreach initiatives for a period of one year.
